An Amtrak train that derailed Monday during its inaugural ride on a new line in Washington State the train was traveling over double the speed limit in that area. The speed limit was 30 mph but the train was traveling at 80 mph.

Track chart prepared by the Washington State Department of Transportation shows the maximum speed drops from 79 mph to 30 mph for passenger trains just before the tracks curve to cross Interstate 5, which is where the train went off the tracks.

The crash happened about 7:40 a.m. in DuPont. The train came out of a curve and ran off the track while crossing or approaching an open trestle over I-5. The following rail cars derailed in a jumble on both sides of the track, with some falling to the highway and landing on vehicles and one rail car dangling precariously over the highway.

The crashed caused 100 people to be taken to hospitals in Pierce and Thurston counties while 3 people lost their lives. Passengers descried how they felt after the crash, “Emma Shafer said she found herself at a 45-degree angle staring at the seats in front of her that had dislodged and swung around.” According to Fox News.

Emma also said “"It felt oddly silent after the actual crashing," Shafer said. “There was people screaming because their leg was messed up. ... I don't know if I actually heard the sirens, but they were there. A guy was like, 'Hey, I'm Robert. We'll get you out of here.'" Fox News Reported
