An organization that has been around for 107 years, has only had boys participate in the organization but now they are going to allow girls to join. The Boy Scouts announced Wednesday that girls that want to join Boy Scouts will be able to in 2018.

The decision has come from decades of mothers and daughters requesting to be a part of the Boy Scouts. Another part of this expansion is to help families that are busy and can use the Boy Scout to get the whole family into a program if they have a boy and a girl.

“Zach Wahls, co-founder of the nonprofit Scouts for Equality, said the development was "yet another step forward," for the Boy Scouts. “Today, the Boy Scouts have made clear they have heard the millions of girls and their families and will allow Scouts of all genders to participate as full members and earn the rank of Eagle," Wahls, an Eagle Scout, said,” according to CNN News

The Girls Scouts are a bit angry that girls are going to be able to join Boy Scouts, "The benefit of the single-gender environment has been well-documented by educators, scholars, other girl- and youth-serving organizations, and Girl Scouts and their families. Girl Scouts offers a one-of-a-kind experience for girls with a program tailored specifically to their unique developmental needs, Girl Scouts USA said.” CNN News wrote.

With the girls being able to join the Boy Scouts, they will have a prestigious goal. This goal is to earn the rank of an Eagle Scout. This rank has many benefits in the long run, such as academic benefits, and even military benefits.
