Chicago is known as one of the most violent cities in America. In this city, there are always a lot of deaths that occur, due to random shooting incidents. This was no different for the Memorial Day weekend this year. It was reported by local Chicago police that 6 people were killed while over 40 people were injured in a celebration gone bad.

During this holiday weekend many police were prepared for whatever incidents may have taken place. Being that previous Memorial Day holiday shootings had occurred, police had already figured it would happen again, which it did. Police were stationed in neighborhoods according to their rate of violence: the most violent neighborhoods had many police on duty, while less violent neighborhoods had less. Despite the amount of police that were placed in the most violent neighborhoods, high level shootings still occurred.

Most of the Illinois State Troopers were stationed on expressways due to the amount of fatal shootings that had occurred earlier in the year. However, no shootings on expressways had occurred. Don Babwin, a reporter for MSN News, states “The roads didn’t escape gun violence though.” In one shooting incident that occurred early on Saturday, “a 15-year-old girl who was a passenger in a vehicle on scenic Lake Shore Drive on the city’s North Side was fatally shot,” writes Babwin.

Summertime in Chicago is marked by many shootings and celebrations of lives lost in previous years. From the beginning of 2016 to Monday May 30, there have been 242 deaths due to gun violence reported. That is compared to the 160 gun violence related deaths during the same time period in 2015. As a whole, shooting incidents are on a high this year as compared to last year. There have been 1,233 this year whereas last year there were only 812, all in the same time period. The gun violence in Chicago has slowed down somewhat but there are still expected to be about 500 total homicides by the end of this year.
