Woman’s Condition Makes Her Unable To Hear Men

posted Jan 16, 2019, 7:50 AM by PHS Warrior Beat

By: Jenny Tran

Hearing conditions are nothing new. In the United States alone, over 48 million people are impacted by hearing loss, according to a web publication from the Center for Hearing and Communication.

Rare medical conditions often trend in the news. The most recent case was when a woman in China was unable to hear men due to the low-frequencies in their voices.

The woman, Chen, who was located in Xiamen, China, went to sleep sick one night with a reported vomiting and a ringing in her ears. Chen then woke up the next morning unable to hear her boyfriend’s voice when he was speaking to her. Chen and her boyfriend then went to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with reverse slope hearing loss, according to a web publication from the AJC.

The condition sounds bizarre, because most people equate “hearing loss” with the loss of the ability to hear high-frequency sounds. Reverse slope hearing loss is the exact opposite. Reverse slope hearing loss results in the inability to hear low frequency sounds. The condition itself is extremely rare, because “for every 12,000 cases of hearing loss, only one person has reverse slope hearing loss,” according to a web publication from Audiology Hears.

Although this condition is extremely rare, doctors at the Qianpu Hospital expect Chen to make a full recovery from it. Doctors believe that stress and fatigue may have caused Chen’s condition. Although there are other things that can cause reverse slope hearing loss; for example “genetic conditions, injuries or types of drug use,” can contribute to causing reverse slope hearing loss, according to an audiologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Bishop Resigns after Allegations of Misconduct

posted Dec 20, 2018, 7:33 AM by PHS Warrior Beat

By: John Sigrist

A bishop has recently resigned after allegations of misconduct with a minor. The Los Angeles Bishop, Alexander Salazar, had been accused of misconduct with a minor a year after his 2004 ordination.

Pope Francis accepted Salazar’s resignation on Wednesday, December 19th.

The accusation came from an incidents in the 1990’s when Salazar was still a parish priest and not an ordained bishop. He has denied all of the allegations and any wrong doing of any kind.

The allegations had been investigated by law enforcement in 2002, although the district attorney didn’t prosecute.

Many catholic bishops and priests have received heat for the constant accounts of abused children, and the failure to take responsibility for their actions. People are unsure what the right course of action is to handle allegations of misconduct against a bishop or a priest.

“I feel like it is just a stereotype,” says junior Daniel Christopher. “Sometimes the allegations are true and sometimes they aren’t. You really never know. I think it gives other priests and bishops a bad reputation because of the mistakes others make. It’s not all of them.”

False allegations can be made against anyone, from government officials to hollywood stars to religious figures. Without a proper investigation it is unknown if the allegation are true.

Norwegian Cruise Company Will Use Dead Fish Waste To Fuel Their Ships

posted Dec 19, 2018, 7:06 AM by PHS Warrior Beat

By: Tyler Baylous

It’s been shown that massive cruise ships contribute to a significant portion of today’s air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, a cruise ship emits almost as many fine particles daily as one million cars. But one Norwegian cruise line, Hurtigruten, is working to combat this problem by using fuel from dead fish.

Strange as it may sound, this method has been scientifically shown to be incredibly effective, especially in countries like Norway where fish and fish waste is plentiful. Norway’s expansive fishing industry yields enough fish waste that it can actually be turned into a legitimate form of fuel, known as liquid biogas.

Liquid biogas can be created by mixing the unwanted parts of fish with other organic waste, like wood and wood chips. When the organic matter mixture is broken down without oxygen, a mixture of different gasses is produced which is mostly made up of methane and carbon dioxide and can then be purified and liquefied into usable fuel.

Hurtigruten claims that they’ll be on their way to carbon neutrality by implementing this innovative fuel in their operations.

“What others see as a problem, we see as a resource and a solution,” the company’s chief executive, Daniel Skjeldam, reported. “By introducing biogas as fuel for cruise ships, Hurtigruten will be the first cruise company to power ships with fossil-free fuel.”

Company spokesman Rune Thomas Ege says that the first liquid biogas-powered cruise ship could be ready to set sail as soon as early 2019.

Hurtigruten also reportedly is aiming to have six of its 17 ships run on a combination of biogas, batteries, and liquified natural gas by 2021.

Being “the world’s largest expedition cruise line comes with a great responsibility,” Skjeldam stated. Perhaps other companies will follow in their wake.

A Jet Airways flight in India, traveling from Mumbai to Jaipur, had to return to Mumbai for an emergency landing after just 45 minutes in the air. The pilots reportedly “forgot” to flick the switch that stabilizes cabin pressure, and as a result, multiple passengers bled from their ears and nose.

“The 9W 697 Mumbai-Jaipur flight was turned back to Mumbai after take off as, during the climb, crew forgot to select switch to maintain cabin pressure. This resulted in the oxygen masks dropping,” said Lalit Gupta, deputy director general with the country’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, according to the Hindustan Times. “Thirty out of 166 passengers experienced nose and ear bleeding, some also complained of headache.”

The Boeing 737 landed safely early Thursday at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. A few passengers tweeted out video and photos of the incident.

The airline released a statement saying five passengers “were referred to a hospital for additional medical check-up,” but it appears that no one was seriously injured. The airline added that it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation carried out DGCA.

The Voyager's Long Voyage

posted Dec 17, 2018, 7:20 AM by PHS Warrior Beat   [ updated Dec 17, 2018, 7:50 AM ]

By: Noah Speta

The Voyager 2 is on an endless mission, one that will only end if something or someone takes it out of space or if it accidentally hits something. Voyager 2’s mission has finally carried the craft into a new place, in the middle of space outside of the solar system.

Voyager 2 and its twin craft the Voyager 1 have both been in space flight since 1977, with their original missions just to take pictures and to allow NASA to see Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune at a closer distance than the satellites on Earth. An accomplishment that the Voyagers had achieved in 1986. Since then the Voyager’s have been barreling through space at high speeds.

With the Voyagers both being in flight for such a long time both have finally reached Interstellar flight, and have finally left an area that is being influenced by the sun's influence as on December 10th Voyager 2 has left the Heliosphere. Now with both Voyager crafts out into a place we as humans have never reached before, it can help us learn about what else is out there in space.

The Bodies Of Duo Climbers Found 30 Years Later

posted Dec 17, 2018, 7:11 AM by PHS Warrior Beat   [ updated Dec 17, 2018, 7:21 AM ]

By: Chyna McCoy

In November of 2018, two bodies were discovered by an American climber in the Himalayas.

After 30 years, some bit of closure has finally been found. The only mystery that remains, is how the two climbers crossed the great divide.

At the bottom of a glacier, the two bodies were unearthed. Kristinn Runarsson and Thorsteinn Gudjonsson had embarked, in October of 1988, on a journey to reach the summit of the Pumori Mountain. Both of the men were experienced climbers and were believed to have made it to the top of the mountain due to the positioning of their ropes.  In one of the pockets of the climbers was a roll of film which has been given to professionals to analyze. Their bodies were taken to Kathmandu, Nepal for cremation and then sent back to Iceland. Although it’s unclear how they perished, the discovery of their bodies have provided closure for family, friends, and the world.
