The Pocomoke High School’s girls’ varsity basketball team defeated Mardela Friday night 36-35. Piajah Johnson lead the Lady Warriors with 14 points, following DeShonda Dennis scored 12 points, and Ajah Kellam added in 9 points.

Friday night’s game was very close and intense but the lady warriors never gave up. After being down 6 points in the first quarter, the girls kicked it up a little. In the second quarter the lady warriors took over and made a statement. Their defensive game was on point along with their offense. Ending the first half Pocomoke was up 19-18.

During the third quarter, the lady warriors came out with intensity and determination. After losing to Mardela in the Governor’s Challenge, giving them their first win of the season, Pocomoke was determined not to let it happen again. The team crashed the boards and took over the game defensively.

As the game carried on, the score began to get close. Mardela started to out hustle the lady warriors but they made up for it on the offensive end by drawing the fouls and making shots. Pocomoke was down 34-35 with seconds left in the fourth quarter. Piajah Johnson received the ball from an out of bounds play and made the layup just before the buzzer sounded and won the game for the lady warriors.

This game against Mardela was a tough battle but the lady warriors stuck through it all and fought hard to win. As long as the team plays together like they did against Mardela, the rest of their season will be a great one. Pocomoke will be facing Mardela again home on February 14 at 3:30 pm. Varsity girls with be playing first, following will be jv boys, and ending the night the varsity boys will play. Come out and support your warriors.
