Phones are distracting students more than helping in schools.

In July of 2018, the French government passed a law banning cell phones in schools. According to CNN, the law passed 62 votes to one. The policy came into effect during the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year and impacts students in kindergarten through the 9th grade.

Some schools across the U.S. are enacting similar policies as a way to decrease distractions for students. "It was a constant distraction for kids and what it became is a constant discipline issue," Robin Kvalo, Principal of Portage High School, tells Wisconsin Public Radio. Kvalo says the school confiscated over 200 phones during the last school year, and that students and teachers are seeing results.

"They are not distracted anymore," she says. "The phones are not their preoccupation. They know they can't have the phones in the classroom. If that had been the case years ago, we wouldn't have needed the policy."

It doesn't take a scientist to tell you that cell phones can be distracting, but if you want to do happy to want confirmation from a scientist, it's not hard to find. Research published by the University of Chicago found that even if cell phones are turned off, turned face down or put away, their mere presence reduces people's cognitive capacity.

Today, 95 percent of American adults own a cell phone of some kind and 77 percent own a smartphone, according to the Pew Research Center. Also reports that 95 percent of teens have or have access to a smartphone, and 45 percent of teens say they are online on a near-constant basis. The meteoric rise in mobile devices such as these has radically changed classrooms across the country and around the world.

Electric Cars Are Better Than Gas Cars

posted Jan 22, 2019, 6:54 AM by PHS Warrior Beat

By: Jenny Tran

One of the most annoying things about having a car is paying for gas. Gas prices fluctuate all the time, and depending on where you live and what gas your car takes, you could be paying up to three dollars per gallon of gas. With the advancements that have been seen recently in electric cars, it makes sense to switch over.

Electric cars are much better for the environment than traditional gasoline cars. Electric cars emit zero tailpipe emissions, which will help drastically reduce air pollution. Currently, “motor vehicles collectively cause 75 percent of carbon monoxide pollution in the U.S.” according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Cleaner air will result in a better environment, and could slow down the effects of global warming by reducing the carbon footprint caused by humans.

Electric cars are also cheaper in the long run compared to traditional gas cars. It was discovered that the average cost to operate an electric car was $485 per year while the average cost to operate a traditional gas car was $1,117, according to a 2018 study from the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute. Although these numbers may vary depending on the type of vehicle that is being driven, overall it is evident that electric cars will be much more cost effective in the long run.

Although electric cars are on the come up, one difficulty with electric cars is that there is are limited options on the market that are fully electric. Most companies offer hybrid vehicles that incorporate both gas and electricity, but according to a web publication by EverCharge, “currently, there are only ~30 purely electric vehicle models to choose from.” So with this limitation, it can be difficult to find a model that is within budget and looks nice.

For example, the cheapest electric car on the market right now is the 2018 Smart Fortwo EQ and it starts at around $23,800. The car itself is small and impractical for a family, so most electric sedans start at around $30,000. For a more luxury feel, the most expensive electric car comes from the American car company Tesla, and the Model X starts at $84,000.

So even though electric cars are becoming popular, the limitation of models is currently one big problem. But if you have the means to afford an electric car, making the switch is definitely worth it in the long run.

Choosing the Superior Phone

posted Jan 18, 2019, 7:49 AM by PHS Warrior Beat

By: John Sigrist

Choosing the right phone can be a difficult decision for those who have no idea what to look for. There are many different phones out there but none compare to the phones with the Android OS, specifically Samsung’s Galaxy line of phones. It trumps any Apple phone with its better hardware, specs, and customizability.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 has specs that are far better than the latest iPhone. With octa-core performance, 4GB of ram, 3000mAh battery, and a 12MP camera, the Galaxy S9 beats the latest iPhone, the iPhone XR, in every way. Not only does the Galaxy S9 have 64GB of onboard storage, but it also has something that the iPhone simply does not have, which is expandable storage. It has up to 400GB of expandable storage with an SD card, not to mention it also has cloud storage capabilities.

The hardware capabilities of the Galaxy S9 also far surpass those of the iPhone XR, if any at all. It features wireless and fast charging with the use of a USB-C adapter, which is universally supported by many other products. Unfortunately for iPhone users, if you want to connect your phone to a computer, you’ll need to use the lightning cable that is only supported by Apple products. Some apple products do not even support the lightning cable. The latest MacBook charges through a USB-C port, making iPhone users buy an adapter if they want to directly plug their phone into their Macbook. Another major hardware capability of the Galaxy is the built-in audio jack. If you ever wanted to charge your phone and plug in your headphones at the same time, then you’ll love the built-in audio jack of the Galaxy S9.  Good luck to iPhone users who have to choose to either listen to music, charge their phone, or go out and buy one of the expensive adapters or Airpods, further draining your wallet for that “Apple” name.

The USB-C port of the Galaxy allows for access to many other peripherals that can be used with the phone. From keyboards to mice, to projectors, a wide assortment of add-ons can be plugged into the universal USB-C port of the Galaxy S9.

There are many ways to unlock your phone using the Galaxy S9. Some are more secure than others, and some are not even featured on the latest iPhone. You can use a standard pin, a pattern, or a password to lock your phone, but the Galaxy S9 features much more than that, however. You can choose from fingerprint and facial recognition locks for your phone. One feature that isn’t featured in the latest iPhone is the retina scanner, which is one of the most secure ways to lock your phone.

The Android OS also features a true file system in its machines. If you plug in your iPhone to your computer, you’ll have to download the iTunes program on your computer and even then you can only move media files to and from your computer. When you plug in your Android device into your computer, it functions as an external drive, allowing you to move the files you want from your phone into the files on your computer and vice versa.

One of the best features of the Android OS is the back button. Ever tap on a link you didn’t mean to go to? Ever just want to go back to the app you were on a second ago? The back button allows users to return to the previous place they were no matter where you are. On iPhones however, you have to find the contextual back arrow that takes you back, there is no universal back button.

Some say that iPhones are much more user-friendly than android phones, and this is true. The problem is that you have to use the phone the way Apple wants you to use it. Which is good for older people who don’t use technology a lot, but bad for those who want more out of their phone than just talk and text.

Looking at the specs alone the Samsung Galaxy S9 blows the latest iPhone away. It has much more customizability options and is much cheaper than the latest iPhone. Android phones are clearly the best choice of phone for those who want to save money and have a powerful device.

HTC Announces New VR Headset

posted Jan 18, 2019, 7:14 AM by PHS Warrior Beat   [ updated Jan 18, 2019, 7:20 AM ]

By: John Sigrist

HTC has recently announced their new upcoming virtual reality headset on January 7th, 2019. Its name is the “Vive Cosmos” and is meant to be a new mainstream style VR headset.

Unlike the previous HTC Vive headset, the Vive Cosmos does not require any external sensing tech. The headset and the controllers are fully tracked without the use of mounted sensors.

The product is being featured as a convenient device with easy setup and absolute comfort in mind. It also features a flip-up mask, allowing the user to see what is around them without having to go through the trouble of taking the whole headset off. Combined with the tracking cameras on the front and sides of the headset, the Vive Cosmos looks to be a high tech but comfortable VR headset.

This new headset features different controllers than the ones that HTC has released before. Similar to the Oculus controllers, there is now a thumbstick and traditional buttons on the controllers as well as a circular tracking part that surrounds the users' hands. Unlike the previous Vive controllers, there is no trackpad on the new Vive Cosmos controllers.

This headset will be PC based but is said to have functionality with other devices such as smartphones. While at launch it will only be supported by PC, it is rumored that that will be wireless capabilities for the headset.

While a lot is still not known about the Vive Cosmos, it is exciting to see what the new features and technology has to offer.

The Benefits of Your60

posted Jan 15, 2019, 6:40 AM by PHS Warrior Beat

By: Julie-Anna Humphreys

Wouldn’t it be nice to get an hour to do just about whatever you want in school? After doing work all day, and sitting in a classroom, students need time to relax and take a breather. Some schools only get up to twenty five minutes of lunch. Pocomoke High School had assigned shifts for students lunch shifts for years. Just recently, we have started a new procedure called “Your60.”

Your60 is a 60 minute period with two separate sessions. It starts at 10:51 a.m., and ends at 11:57 a.m. During this time, we can choose to eat lunch, get help with teachers, do makeup work/tests, study, practice for band or sports, etc. We used to have activities such as coloring, yoga, movies, etc.

Previously, Pocomoke High School had three different lunch shifts (A,B, and C) that students were assigned to which only lasted twenty five minutes. The lunch lines were usually so long some people didn’t even have time to get their lunch and eat it before that lunch shift was over. Some students didn’t even have people to sit with since their friends might’ve been assigned a different shift than them.

Since students spend over six hours at school, it’s essential that we get a break. Since the start of Your60, students have remarked that they appreciate it way more than what we did before it started. According to Chyna McCoy, “Your60 is able to give students the opportunity to improve their grades, and gives them a chance to catch up on anything that’s needed, all while giving them free time.”

Students are more successful, they can get a lot more done, and they get freedom to take a break and relax. McCoy also remarked,“I went to Mrs. Winfield to take a test, and it brought my grade up by 3 points which is something I really needed.” It’s especially beneficial for seniors since they need to get a lot more done for college, work, graduation, or whatever they plan on doing after high school.

According to Arthur Morgan Schools website, it states “...students need free time to process and practice the lessons they learned during academic periods.”

People who work get breaks, so having a break at school can only be fair.

PHS Should Ban The Student Dress Code

By: Chyna McCoy

For many years now, schools have always maintained a dress code. Most schools, such as Pocomoke High School, considers clothing such as tank-tops and short shorts, a violation of the dress code. According to the National Center for Education statistics, about 57% of public schools, nationwide, enforce a strict dress code.

The dress code is supposed to provide guidance to students as to having on appropriate clothing, mainly to avoid any distractions/disruptions in the learning environment  Not only is the dress code supposed to provide guidance, it’s supposed to teach students about the importance of obtaining and keeping job through the attire that you choose to wear. In other words, the dress code wants you to look as professional as possible.

However, for the person who violates dress the code, things can get pretty frustrating. Not only does the student get frustrated, parents get frustrated as well. Many parents do not agree on the dress code as they see it as unnecessary. Lots of parents also work as well, so when they get a call from their child at school, asking them to bring them a new set of clothes, the parent gets upset because they are unable to do so.  For the student, if their parent can’t bring them a change of clothes, they are placed into ISS or In School Suspension. Sometimes, situations like this can even lead to the student receiving OSS or Out of School Suspension.

There are many reasons that the dress code should be banned. Dress codes take away creativity from the student. Typically, teenagers dress in ways that express who they are and what they like. In 1965 a 13-year old girl was sent home for protesting the Vietnam War. The judge found that the armband was not a disruption to the learning process and therefore allowed any student. Restricting the opportunity for teenagers to express themselves can bestow more stress onto the student. The freedom of religion is also taken away, as the use of any type of head scarf such as turbans and yarmulkes are considered a distraction and is therefore against dress code. Most of the clothes that are in a student dress code, are clothes that are mostly worn by females. Therefore the student dress code seems to primarily target females.According to Julie-Anna Humphreys, “It’s unfair because girls have specific regulations on what they need to wear, while boys in the gym can run around shirtless”

In conclusion, the student dress code should be banned due to its substantial amount of flaws. If there is going to be an enforced dress code, the aspects of said dress code, should allow you to express creativity and religion, all while reducing stress on both students and parents.

Why You should Choose Bluetooth Over Wired Headphones

posted Jan 11, 2019, 7:37 AM by PHS Warrior Beat   [ updated Jan 11, 2019, 7:42 AM ]

By: Colby Speta

Bluetooth headphones have so many more advantages to normal wired headphones. There are many reasons for the switch to bluetooth from having limited reach with the wire or just a better sound from bluetooth headphones.

Bluetooth headphones haven’t always been better than their predecessor. The range is bigger than what the wire can reach now.

With the older versions of bluetooth, the range was very limited. “In 2008, only 5% of mobile devices were Bluetooth-enabled. Compare that to today, when roughly 95% of mobile devices support it” reported by Business insider.

Another important feature that comes from the modern bluetooth versions ”lets a single device act as "master" and communicate with up to seven "slaves" at once.” according to Business Insider.

One feature with old and new features is that they are all compatible with all other versions including the first version 1.1, 1.2, 2.0 plus EDR, 3.0 plus HB, and version 4. Also version 5 is better and will “boast quadruple the range, double the speed, and boosts broadcast messaging capacity by 800%. It also introduces the mesh networking capability mentioned above.” according to knowtechie.com.

On the other hand people use wired headphones everyday because they’re convenient and you don’t have to charge them. While this is true, the bluetooth headphones provide a better sound and bass that the wired headphones can’t provide.

Bluetooth will keep working on the wireless capabilities to improve the connection from farther distances.

Pocomoke Should Have Open Lunch For Seniors

posted Jan 11, 2019, 7:37 AM by PHS Warrior Beat   [ updated Jan 11, 2019, 7:38 AM ]

By: Jenny Tran

Many students believe that once they walk onto school campus, they lose many of their freedoms. Once the eight o’clock bell rings, students are stuck on the school’s campus for roughly eight hours. Aside from a one hour lunch break, students are cooped up in classrooms unable to have any sort of freedom. Implementing open campus lunch for seniors at Pocomoke High School would give students the opportunity to gain some freedom before they are set off into the “real world.”

Open campus lunches aren’t something that is uncommon. Many school districts across the nation have implemented open campus lunches for their upperclassman students. One perk of having open campus lunches is that it gives students a mental break. During the lunch period, students are able to go out and eat some place quiet and peaceful, like a park or on the docks. Students can even go home for a quick power nap, so that they can re-energize for the second half of the school day. Noah Speta agrees that Pocomoke High should implement open campus lunch, and says that “with your60, it gives us an hour to goto local restaurants to help boost the local economy.”

One big concern about open campus lunches is that students could run into some trouble while they are out and about, and some students may even skip the rest of the school day if given the chance to leave campus for lunch. Currently with closed campus lunch, the school knows where students are in the event of an emergency. The opportunity to skip class is also a lingering concern, but Donna Jones, principal of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High, believes that “students who choose to skip class would likely make that choice regardless of whether we had open lunch.”

The choice to implement open campus lunches can teach students both the responsibility of time management and budgeting. If open campus lunch is only given to seniors, it can teach them the skill of time management, which is useful no matter what path of life they choose to take after graduation. Budgeting is also a skill that is important no matter what students decide to do in life. If students are allowed to leave for lunch, they will soon realize that eating an $8 meal everyday is very impractical. Gabe Nock believes that “allowing students to go off campus could teach time management because we would have to be back at a certain time or else there would be consequences.”

Open campus lunch may seem like a risky idea, but it could definitely benefit the Pocomoke community. Open campus lunch has the opportunity to help teach important life lessons to students, along with being an incentive to seniors who are deserving of it.

Education Comes With A Price

posted Jan 10, 2019, 7:37 AM by PHS Warrior Beat

By: Jasmine Richardson  Normally for some teenagers, furthering their education is a dream, but some cannot accomplish this dream because they don’t have to money to do so or don’t want to live most of their adult life paying student loans. Also some parents see they can’t for college tuition for their child/children, so they prefer they work instead of going to college.  Not only is the tuition for class expensive, but some colleges require students to sign up for the meal plan and other additional expenses.

According to College Education.ProCon.org, “About 44 million Americans owed over $1.5 trillion in student debt”, As May 2018. Also 10% of student graduate with over $400,000 and 1% of students graduate with $100,000 in debt. With the missing of payment, it can cause your credit score to decrease, and it can add fees that can result in the threatening of their future in employment and purchases.

Only 20% of millennials are home owners and most explained that their student loan debt delayed their plans to own a home for an average of seven years according to College Education.org. Not only does student loans affect student’s financial stability, it can results in some students living with their parents and postponed marriage and other future plan that they might have.

Even after some student graduates, it is not a guarantee that they will get a job right away, so they have to struggle to find a way to pay back student loans, with no job. Also if student loans are not paid, there is interest fees, which makes it a longer struggle to pay the debt.

Although, with high tuition cost it allows the colleges to remodel and updated the equipment and resources needed for the campus and the students. The increased fund allows better opportunities for the student to be ready for their career choice. This also allows colleges to have more programs, which makes them good competition for other campuses and it increases student population in school.

David Hodge, president of Miami University in Ohio, explained to U.S. News and World Report that,, “Some schools use the money to improve career centers or develop programs for students with physical, emotional or mental disabilities.” College may use the funding for building ramps and others accessibilities. Colleges may use funding for also securities and emergency systems. Colleges can use the funding for repairs as well.

Student loans can last many years even after a person has graduated and in bankruptcy the loans may not be forgiven. “A 2011 study found 60% of people attempting to discharge student loan debt in bankruptcy were unsuccessful.” According to College Education.org. The only way to discharge your student loan in bankruptcy is to prove “undue Hardship” College Education states. Doug Wallace, Jr. who fought for six years to have his $38,000 in student loans discharged after becoming blind and being unable to work; his student loans were not discharged although his medical debt was immediately discharged.

Education shouldn’t have to come at a high price. Its suppose to help you gain money, not go into debt.

Is iOS Really Better Than Android?

posted Jan 10, 2019, 7:02 AM by PHS Warrior Beat

By: Tyler Baylous

The internet is filled with words about Android and iOS and why one is better than the other. The real way to find out which phone is better for each person is what each phone actually has that is good for you.

The way Android and iOS are updated is very different. Google uses Play Services to handle many of the security and application compatibility parts of Android, and iOS updates don't include every feature for older models. But there is still no denying that updates are handled on iOS better than they are on Android.

Apple's iMessage is both the best and worst messaging app to ever be created. It's a seamless process out of the box that lets you send texts or messages with rich content without installing anything. But it only works on Apple devices. Google has tried and failed at recreating this time after time. The biggest reason is that it wants a solution that works everywhere on everything, not just Android. The Hangouts app was able to do it, but the clunky interface and need to manually install it meant most people using Android weren't hanging out and Google is pushing it away from the consumer side.

Apple collects data from everyone who uses iOS and does a good job of keeping it anonymous and in-house. Google does the same, regardless of what you might read from other places. But Android has some serious issues when it comes to security and privacy.

Updates are part of the problem. Your Pixel is probably protected against some ways the hackers try taking your data. Your BlackBerry does also. But any other model, including the ones that sell by the tens of millions and drive Android's market share, might not. Google taking good care of your data doesn't matter when hackers get your bank login because you were tricked into installing something that old software allows. With an iPhone you don't have to even think or worry about that problem.

Honestly, if you want an easy phone to use that has great privacy and anti-hacking, iPhone just might be the phone for you. If you are a tech person and you like gaming and high speed and extra added on storage then Android is for you. It's all up to what the user wants. For some people, it is a tough decision and for some, it isn't, you decide.
