Emotional support animals help those with mental illnesses that hinder everyday life. Emotional support animals are protected by the law that they are allowed Image result for emotional support animalalmost anywhere regardless of rules set by the property except if it is non-pet friendly. These animals can range from ducks to dogs. According to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), approximately 1 in 5 adults experience a mental illness in a given year and 1 in 5 youth aged 13-18 also experience a mental illness in the given year. Also according to NAMI, more the 90% of children who have committed suicide had a mental illness.

To have an emotional support animal is to have someone there for you whenever you need to be comforted. According to www.animallaw.info, “An emotional support animal is a companion animal that provides therapeutic benefit to an individual with a mental or psychiatric disability.” Also according to www.animallaw.info, “...emotional support animal is an animal (typically a dog or cat though this can include other species) that provides a therapeutic benefit to its owner through companionship. The animal provides emotional support and comfort to individuals with psychiatric disabilities and other mental impairments.” But according to www.anxiety,org, “You can take your ESA to fly in the cabin of an aircraft and you can qualify for no-pet housing with your ESA, but your ESA is not allowed in non-pet friendly motels, restaurants, taxis, buses, markets, and other privately owned businesses.”

These animals are good doers for us humans that are mentally ill. According to www.anxiety.org, “A 2009 study confirmed that having a companion dog improved the anxiety levels of elderly residents of a long term care facility.” Also from www.anxiety.org, “A study in 1991 found that dogs helped regulate autonomic stress in women.” Finally from www.anxiety.org, “In 2001, a study showed that pet owners had lower heart rates and blood pressure levels and reacted better to psychological and physical stress and recovered quicker from those stresses.”

Emotional support animals help those with life hindering mental illnesses. There are people who take advantage of emotional support animals and use phony documents to take their animals onto to planes and etc. Because of those people, others may believe emotional support animal program should be ended. If that happens, those with mental illnesses will have a tough time living a normal life. If it wasn't for mental support animals, a lot of the people in this world would've committed suicide for not have the support they needed to help them keep on living.
