Is playing sports as a middle schooler good for your health? Many say yes, while some have examined the cons of having middle school sports.

The first reason for having middle school sports is that it allows for team play, which can improve a child’s social skills. Many argue that there is nothing bad about getting to be on a team with your friends and compete in a game with rules and regulations. This can build a students’ confidence and drive them to work to be better at something.

Another reason for having middle school sports is that it improves academic performance. A study done by The University of Kansas showed that students who participated in physical activity are 10% more likely to graduate. Not only that, but student athletes also had higher GPAs than students who did not participate in sports.

A con of middle school sports that people like to bring up is that it puts a lot of stress on the students. Many students can get overwhelmed by the push to win games. This can make the students enjoyment of the sport lessen and eventually make them quit altogether. Quitting sports as a middle schooler can hurt a students chances of being really good in high school.

“I’m glad I was able to play sports when I was in middle school. That's why I still play in high school, to try to get better each and every day. It really helped me become a better soccer player for high school. I also got to learn how to be on a team and work with others to win games.” said senior Colby Speta.

While there are some pros and cons to middle school sports, students should still try them anyways as the pros greatly outweigh the cons.
