    Even though we learned a lot this year, there are still quite a few things that we may have not known. Here are 10 facts about 2017 that many people don’t know.

1. 2017 is the United Nations’ International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

2. 2,017 is a prime number making this the first prime year since 2011. The next one will be 2027

3. 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia. It was on November 7, but that was still October on the Julian calendar.

4. It’s also the centenary of the founding of the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals in England.

5. This year is the bicentenary of the Cuban cigar: King Ferdinand VII of Spain legalised the production and sale of tobacco in Cuba.

6. 2017 is the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death

7. and marks the 300th anniversary of the first ballet performed in Britain: The Loves Of Mars And Venus at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

8. It is also 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on a church door to launch Protestantism.

9. 2017 also marks a 1,000 years since King Cnut (Canute) divided England into four earldoms: Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia and Northumbria.

10. Word centenaries include moronic (first used in 1917), referendum (1817) and antelope (1417).
